In an In-Season Tournament game on Friday night, LeBron James equaled his season-high with 35 points, and the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 107-95 to record their sixth straight loss.
With the victory that counts toward the regular season, Anthony Davis added 16 points and 14 rebounds, and the Lakers improved to 3-0 in Group A.
Portland’s Jerami Grant scored 24 points. The Blazers’ defeat sent them to 1-2 overall and ended their hopes of winning their group in the competition.
In the last quarter, the Lakers had a 17-point lead. With slightly more than seven minutes remaining, Rui Hachimura’s 3-pointer gave Los Angeles a 97-83 lead, sending supporters packing.
Despite having a calf contusion and starting and playing with a sleeve on his leg, James ended up with nine assists despite being listed as questionable.
Because point differential counts in the group standings, Los Angeles rested its starters until the very end.
The Lakers jumped out to a 13-point lead in the opening quarter and continued their 30-point advantage into the second. After a 3-pointer by D’Angelo Russell extended the lead to 54-40, the team led 60-50 at the half.

Early in the third quarter, Portland’s Jerami Grant made a 3-pointer and a free throw to cut the lead to 63-60. With three from Skylar Mays, the Blazers came as close as 68-67.
For the Lakers, who had just ended a three-game winning streak with a 125-110 loss to the Sacramento Kings, Russell finished with 14 points.For the Blazers, Deandre Ayton finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Portland has been plagued by injuries as they attempt to rebuild following the offseason departure of All-Star Damian Lillard. Out of the lineup are rookie Scoot Henderson (right ankle), Malcolm Brogdon (left hamstring), and starting guard Anfernee Simons (right thumb).
We’re really young. Coach Chauncy Billups stated, “We spend most of our time talking about our concepts or things we want to do, and a little time on the Lakers or the Grizzlies or whoever.” This is true even during walkthroughs and shootarounds. “We’re still learning so much.”
